Title: PEPFAR in Uganda - Revisiting after 20 years
Presented by: Peter Solberg, MD
Brief Description: In 2024, Dr. Solberg traveled back to Uganda to visits sites where he worked as an HIV provider in the early days of PEPFAR funding delivering lifesaving HIV antivirals and medical care. PEPFAR has been credited for saving 25 million lives in resource limited areas devastated by HIV. Dr. Solberg revisits the history of the HIV epidemic in Uganda and discusses the current situation, including some unintended consequences of PEPFAR.
Case Presentations and Discussion Presenters: Lynette Johnson, RN
Brief Description: Lynette will present two cases of older patients with HIV, both having been in care since the late 80s. As they aged, dealing with long term consequences of HIV and its treatments, their level of disability is exceeding the level of support that family can provide. Trying to build in more support involves a complex puzzle of available services, funding sources and preferences which may leave them without acceptable options. Lynette will walk us through these explorations.
