Course Description: This course is geared toward learning about LGBTQIPA2S+,
microaggressions and mental health risks. This course is great for any person working in any
capacity in a non-profit, mental health, or medical agency. This course assists participants with
helpful strategies to become greater allies and accomplices for the queer community. This
course highlights common sexuality based microaggressions that occur both within and outside
of therapeutic/medical/non-profit spaces and includes micro-interventions to employ to
reduce harm. This course provides reflective questions and case examples that aim to assist
participants with identifying areas that may create barriers and challenges for working with or
maintaining relationships with LGBTQIPA2S+ clients/colleagues.
Teaching Methods: The course utilizes PowerPoint presentations, case examples, a guided
implicit bias exercise, and tips for becoming an ally/accomplice for the LGBTQIPA2S+
community.
Learning Objectives:
1. Participants will understand the differences between gender and sexuality, gender
identity and gender expression, and sexuality spectrum.
2. Participants will confront implicit biases about the LGBTQIPA2S+ community.
3. Participants will learn about common gender and sexuality based microaggressions as
well as micro-interventions to employ to reduce harm.
4. Participants will be provided with tools and resources necessary to reflect on their own
practice and identify areas that may create barriers and challenges for the
LGBTQIPA2S+ community.
5. Participants will be able to apply supportive strategies and other best practices to employ
when interacting with members of the LGBTQIPA2S+ community.
