2020 HIV Long-Term Survivors Awareness Day (June 5)

HIV Long-Term Survivors Awareness Day (HLTSAD) is commemorated on June 5 – the anniversary of the day in 1981 when the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported the first cases among gay men of a mysterious illness that would later become known as AIDS.

According to its organizers, HLTSAD “focuses on the present-day needs, issues, strengths, and resiliencies of people longest with HIV/AIDS.” The theme for 2020 HLTSAD is ‘Not Our First Pandemic’ – which the awareness day organizers see as “an invitation to survivors to share insights gleaned from surviving the AIDS pandemic with a world gripped by COVID-19 . . . We [long-term survivors] have valuable lessons to teach our community and the world about living and survival. It’s time to embrace our role as elders, teachers, and leaders.”

To help commemorate the HLTSAD, we have compiled a brief annotated list of online resources focusing on HIV long-term survivors.
