The conference will take place from April 15-18 at the Sydney Exhibition and Conference Centre located on the Darling Harbour waterfront. Eighteen months ago, when the conference last convened in Pittsburgh, there was no evidence that topical microbicides or oral pre-exposure prophylaxis could prevent HIV infection. Since then, a number of trials have offered hope despite some disappointment, illustrating just how dynamic HIV prevention research is, thus the theme "From Discovery to Delivery." Attendees will hear from the leading experts in the HIV prevention field from Africa, Asia, Europe, North America and Australia. Researchers: Prevalence of improper condom use a public health issue worldwide (AEGiS.org) Researchers: Prevalence of improper condom use a public health issue worldwide (AEGiS.org) Researchers: Prevalence of improper condom use a public health issue worldwide EurekaAlert! - February 22, 2012 BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Problems with the correct use of the male condom, such as not wearing a condom throughout sex or putting it on upside down, are common in the U.S. and have become a major concern of public health officials. New research shows that countries around the world are facing similar challenges. An unprecedented collection of condom use studies, published in the journal Sexual Health, provides a global perspective on condom use problems and errors, along with new research on factors influencing correct condom use, how condom use programs can be more effective, and the promotion of the female condom. Led by The Kinsey Institute Condom Use Research Team, or CURT, more than 20 researchers from around the world examine and discuss issues such as safe-sex behaviors by American adults, counterfeit condoms in China and use of female condoms in South Africa. AIDS-Related Kaposi's Sarcoma Can Occur during Peginterferon-{alpha} and Ribavirin Therapy for Chronic Hepatitis C Infection AIDS-Related Kaposi's Sarcoma Can Occur during Peginterferon-{alpha} and Ribavirin Therapy for Chronic Hepatitis C Infection Introduction: Before the arrival of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), interferon α has been used successfully to treat AIDS-related Kaposi's sarcoma (KS). Peginterferon-α (pegIFN-α) may still be used successfully in refractory KS. Case: Peginterferon-α and ribavirin (RBV) were initiated to treat hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in an HIV-infected patient with high CD4 counts having discontinued antiretroviral therapy (ART). He developed disseminated KS 6 months after HCV treatment began. Beginning of ART, discontinuation of pegIFN/RBV, and 2 cycles of doxorubicine were necessary to treat KS. Discussion: Despite its activity on KS, thanks to its antiviral and antiangiogenic properties, PegIFN was unable to prevent the occurrence of severe KS. The absence of ART, despite high CD4 counts, and interferon-induced lymphopenia probably triggered the occurrence of KS in this patient.
